Dorohedoro is set in two worlds. The Hole is a decaying city where humans live, and where sorcerers come through doors from their own world to practice magic on people who cannot fight back. The story starts with the result of one of those experiments: a man with a lizard's head, no memory, and a plan to bite every sorcerer he meets until one of them turns out to be the one who did it.
Here is how the setting actually works: what the Hole is, how sorcerers make magic and why it comes out as smoke, what is going on with Kaiman's head, why En turns people into mushrooms, who Nikaido is hiding from, and what the masks are for. Where our own Dorohedoro collection depicts one of these, it is linked in place.
The Hole
The Hole is a slum of a city that sorcerers use as a practice ground. They arrive through magic doors, test spells on whoever is nearest and leave, and the residents are left with the results: people turned partly into animals, faces rearranged, bodies fused together. The city's hospital has a wing for magic victims and a doctor, Kasukabe, who studies them. Nobody in the Hole can use magic, and there is a standing hostility toward sorcerers that the locals enforce with whatever they have to hand.
The reason the sorcerers keep coming is that the Hole is the one place their magic is not immediately answered by other magic, and the reason the humans stay is that they have nowhere else. The manga's texture comes from that: gyoza restaurants, baseball, a yearly holiday when the dead get up and walk, all happening in a place that is, from the sorcerers' point of view, a testing range.

Pieces from the Hole
Sorcerers and smoke
Sorcerers are a separate people who live in their own world, and their magic is physical. Each sorcerer's body produces smoke, usually released from the fingertips, and each sorcerer's smoke does one thing and one thing only. Some can turn a person into a mushroom, some can cut a body into pieces without killing it, some can heal, and some can only do something small and nearly useless. How much smoke you produce and how useful your one trick is decides your whole social standing, and the sorcerers' world is stratified by it as rigidly as any aristocracy.
Smoke can be collected and bottled, which is why a black market exists for it, and why the Cross-Eyes, a gang of sorcerers with little or no smoke of their own, run on a drug made from other sorcerers' magic. Above the sorcerers sit the devils: former sorcerers who passed a brutal training and became something else, immortal, playful and indifferent to everyone. They hand out favors, run the training, and make the masks. The Strange Spell tee is drawn from that magic.
Kaiman's lizard head
Kaiman woke up in the Hole with a reptile's head, no memory of who he was, and one lead: a sorcerer did this. He also has two properties nobody can explain. Magic does not work on him, so no sorcerer can undo or redo what was done, and there is a face inside his mouth. When he bites down on a sorcerer's head, that face looks at them and says whether or not they are the one, and so far the answer has always been no. Kaiman's whole method is to find sorcerers, put their heads in his mouth, and ask.
He is cheerful about it, which is the tone of the whole manga: a man in a brutal situation who mostly wants gyoza and a day off. The question of who he actually is turns out to be the spine of the entire story, and it is not answered until near the end, so it is left alone here. The head is on the Lizard Head Kaiman tee and the Toothy Predator tee; the spell that made it is the subject of the Dorodohero Curse tee.
En's mushrooms
En is the most powerful sorcerer in the story and runs the sorcerers' world the way a crime family runs a city. His smoke turns anything into mushrooms, living things included, and he has built an empire on it: a mushroom-growing business, a mansion, and a private army of sorcerers in his employ. He is obsessive about mushrooms in a way the manga plays for comedy and horror in equal measure. What makes him dangerous is not the magic but the reach: when Kaiman starts eating his employees' heads, En sends his two best people, Shin and Noi, into the Hole to find out why.
Shin's smoke takes bodies apart; Noi's puts them back together. They are partners in the sorcerers' formal sense, a pairing the world's ceremonies exist to create, and they are the closest thing the En family has to a conscience. En family pieces
Nikaido
Nikaido runs the Hungry Bug, the gyoza restaurant Kaiman eats at, and hunts sorcerers alongside him. She is also a sorcerer, which she hides from him and from everyone else in the Hole. Her magic is one of the rarest in the story: she can move time backward, an ability so unusual that when En learns of it he decides she will be his partner whether she agrees or not. That decision drives a large part of the middle of the manga.
She is in the Hole because it is the one place a sorcerer can disappear, and her loyalty to Kaiman is the story's fixed point: a sorcerer and a man who eats sorcerers, hunting sorcerers together. The Sorcerer Hunt hoodie is drawn from that hunt.
The masks
Sorcerers wear masks in the Hole, and the masks are not disguises. They are made by devils and given to sorcerers, each one different, and a sorcerer's mask says as much about them as their smoke does. Wearing one in the Hole marks you as a sorcerer the moment you step through the door, which is the point: the mask says you do not care who knows, because nobody here can stop you.
Graphically they are the most portable thing in the series. Each one is a flat shape with eyeholes, which is why so much Dorohedoro artwork is masks rather than faces. The Mask Riot tee is a crowd of them.
How this translates onto cloth
Dorohedoro is drawn in heavy black ink with a lot of texture, and the artwork that carries best onto a garment keeps that: a lizard head in silhouette, a wall of masks, a mushroom cluster. The series' own grime is the style, so the slightly irregular surface of washed cotton suits it better than a smooth blank would.
